There are a range of supports available in school for pupils designed to remove barriers to accessing education. There are two main types of support. Universal Support and Targeted Support.
Universal Support is the day to day support that pupils receive in the classroom. It takes into account the needs of learners and how materials can be adapted to meet the needs of each pupil
Targeted Support is more specific and aimed at providing access to learning for pupils who find it more challenging to learn in a classroom all the time. There are a range of reasons why a pupil may required targeted support, sometimes it is a short intervention and other times it can be longer term. There are currently 3 rooms at Penicuik High school each providing a different targeted support.
What do each of our support rooms offer?
Room 1
Room 1 is a Support for Learning classroom providing support for students mainly from S1-S3. Older students are able to access this room if it would be helpful for them. Room 1 offers 1-1 or small group support for either help completing classroom work, or support with homework. Pupils who have an identified barrier to accessing learning can benefit from support in room 1.
Room 5
Room 1 is a Support for Learning classroom providing support for students mainly in S3-S5. Room 5 offers 1-1 or small group support for help to complete National Qualifications work. Pupils who have an identified barrier to accessing learning can benefit from support in room 5.
TLC (The Learning Centre)
TLC is a nurture classroom. It is mainly accessed by S1-S3 pupils but continues to provide support for some senior students. TLC delivers curriculum work, but is also a space for pupils who would benefit from Health & Wellbeing support.
To support pupils through National Qualifications, we also offer a wide range of study support across the school.
