A school vision is a statement which lets everyone know what we want to achieve through all the work we do in school. It is important because it gives us all a sense of who we are as a school community and a shared and common purpose. We worked alongside pupils, parents and staff to establish our new school vision:
“At Penicuik High School we aim to create a caring community where everyone is respected, included, treated with kindness, and feels safe. We believe in nurturing a learning environment that strives for excellence, values diversity, promotes dignity and encourages personal growth, preparing students to succeed in a connected world.”
Our vision is can be broken down into two key themes.
The first part of the vision is focussed on pupil wellbeing and promoting a positive school ethos. This is important because it sets the conditions for learning
At Penicuik High School we aim to create a caring community where everyone is respected, included, treated with kindness, and feels safe.
The second part sets the conditions for learning and what we believe will support our pupils to be succesful.
We believe in nurturing a learning environment that strives for excellence, values diversity, promotes dignity and encourages personal growth, preparing students to succeed in a connected world.
Our values should reflect our day to day core business and interactions. These let everyone in our school community know what we believe to be important, and how we should treat one another. They should help up work towards our overall vision and be the best that we can be.
Our new values have been developed and agreed on through consultation. We believe these to be fundamental to helping us achieve the Vision for Penicuik High School.
So What does this all mean?
Kindness
This is about showing care and understanding for others. This will mean as a school everyone can achieve and contribute positively to our school community.
Inclusion
The most important part of our school is the people. All staff and pupils should feel that they belong to our school community. At Penicuik High School we have pupils with a range of different needs and interests. We strive to ensure we are as inclusive as we can be.
Pupils should speak to one of their teachers or guidance teacher if they have any issues or are finding things at school tricky.
Determination
We have kept Determination as one of our key values as it is important that we support young people to face up to challenges head on. Resilience can be developed through approaching situations with determination. Determination is not accepting second best but approaching all the opportunities in and out of the classroom with drive, energy and enthusiasm.
Respect
Respect is a very important value in helping everyone at school to feel happy and safe. There are many different levels of respect. When we respect each other, we act in a way that shows we care about someone's feelings and wellbeing.
Respect extends beyond our interactions with one another and towards the school building and grounds.
